'Iyasasa' Exhibit Coming to SU Art Galleries June 13-August 9
SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University Art Galleries (SUAG) hosts the exhibition “Iyasasa” by Nami Oshiro June 13-August 9, in Fulton Hall’s University Gallery.
An artist talk and reception are 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 24.
Oshiro makes drawings, paintings and comics that play with absurdities in response to societal constructs like race and gender. Her style is influenced by her Okinawan-Japanese background and movements like ukiyo-e and shin hanga.
“Iyasasa” is a cry used in traditional Okinawan folk songs. It is a chant of emphasis with no literal meaning. Nevertheless, it has been passed down in music through generations.
Admission is free and the public is invited.
